Why yoga?
Prior research has shown that breast cancer survivors who practice gentle and therapeutic yoga as a part of a healthful regime experience decreased stress levels and enjoy an enhanced quality of life.  This study hopes to better understand the effects of yoga on breast cancer patients, examining mood, fatigue and immune function.  Funded by the National Cancer Institute, participants enjoy 2 weekly yoga classes 90 minutes in length, which include a combination of restorative postures, breathing techniques and meditation.  Along with the potential psychological and physiological benefits of the practice, participants may also benefit from the social support network formed during classes with fellow breast cancer survivors.

Research has also shown that a therapeutically tailored yoga program has helped relieve hot flashes and menopausal symptoms in breast cancer survivors.  Participants have also experienced less joint pain, greater range of motion in the upper body, decreased sleep disturbances and fatigue, and feel more energized and relaxed.  The Yoga for Breast Cancer Survivors study is designed to accommodate women of all fitness levels.
